My Savior is no God to be trifled with. His power is real and it is big. It is, in fact, so mighty that that when man, who is limited, finite, caused, etc, is in close relationship with Him, other people are healed, miracles are performed, and demons are cast out at the mere touch of the man’s garment. If God’s power is made so magnificently manifest in a simple man, how much more wonderful is it when used by Him? What a mighty God we serve indeed!
I read Acts 18 – 19 the other day and ran into this concept of God’s overwhelming power over and over again…
“God did extraordinary miracles through Paul, so that even handkerchiefs and aprons that had touched him were taken to the sick, and their illnesses were cured and the evil spirits left them.” –Acts 19:11-12
I don’t even know how to expand on this. Paul had a real relationship with God and, through that relationship, God made His power known. God’s power in a righteous man is ineffable, perhaps that’s why I can’t expand on this. But it makes me wonder, if His power is so awesome even in flawed humans, how much more awesome is it in a perfect Savior?
Later on in the chapter (Acts 19:13-20) the Jews attempted to heal people and relieve the demon-possessed by invoking the name of the Lord… as if His Name was something they could play with. When the demons caught on, the Jews were overwhelmed with fear of the Lord. “They were all seized with fear, and the name of the Lord Jesus was held in high honor.” (Acts 19:17b) His name was then held in high honor – as it should be. Following this, word of the Lord spread – many heard and many feared. God took an unfortunate circumstance, and turned it for the glory and spread of His powerful name. God had the power to give Himself glory. He has massive/overwhelming power. Again, what a Mighty God we serve!
Jesus, the extent of your power is beyond human recognition, beyond the things our imagination can fathom. We haven’t even seen most of it and yet we’ve been redeemed by it. In your power, you have triumphed over sin and death. Why do we take this so nonchalantly? You conquered death for Heaven’s sake!!
