Unusual Gratitude

10 potentially atypical things I am thankful for this Thanksgiving…

1) Fingers… I almost chopped one off while cutting the onions today. That’s when I realized that I really like my fingers.
2) Windows… glimpses of the outside world from the inside.
3) Chewable vitamins… I hate swallowing pills.
4) Coffee creamer… because black coffee is gross. Plus, there are so many flavors to choose from!
5) Nail clippers… how terrible would it be if we had to cut our fingernails with scissors?
6) Power outages… the only time when the whole neighborhood is forced to play with flashlights and every house smells of scented candles.
7) My brother Hudson and my cousin Taylor… the only family members shorter than me. (Unless you count pets… even then I might be beat.)
8) Stepstools… because sometimes (a lot of times), I just can’t reach everything.
9) Apples to Apples… thanks to this game, I am “elite,” “inspiring,” and “fancy.” (Simultaneously, I am “cruel,” “organic,” and “touchy-feely”… but we don’t have to get into that.)
10) George Washington Carver… and where would the world be today without peanut butter?

...

As I prepare for yet another Thanksgiving holiday and think about all the things I am thankful for, it’s the common things that immediately come to mind… you know, the types of things you always say you are thankful for: God’s forgiveness, family, friends, roof over your head, etc. But what about the small (or even silly) things that make life enjoyable? Like nail clippers and peanut butter? While I am thankful for the bigger things, I am taking this holiday to think about the smaller and even bizarre things I am thankful for, but often forget to give God praise for.

What small or unusual things are you thankful for this Thanksgiving? Just something to think about…
