Bike trouble?

No thanks; got some.

As much fun as it was to have our own bikes the whole time we were in Oisterwiejk and as much as I will miss ringing that little bike bell, I sure won’t miss the bike troubles we had.

Here’s the deal: Bikes are like cars in Holland; it’s the main form of transportation. But since bikes are a lot easier to steal than cars, almost all bikes have a lock on them. In order to ride the bike, you would use a key to unlock the wheel (kinda like you would need a key to make your car engine work). When you park your bike somewhere, you take the key out and the wheel locks automatically.

Bike keys are a great idea... until you forget to take them out of the bike when you park it.

(My bike, minus the key)

Sure enough, we biked into town one day (about a 40 minute ride from our hotel) and I absent-mindedly left my key in the bike when I parked it. When we came back 2 hours later, the bike was still there, but the key was gone. (Why someone would take the key without the bike, I have no idea. It saved me 500 euro though. It only cost 5 euros to replace the key, and that's something I can definitely afford.) Which meant I couldn't unlock it to ride it. And, being 40 minutes away from our hotel, I couldn't exactly walk back in time for dinner...

This was our solution instead:

Yep. I got a sweet-ride on the back of Ryan's bike, all the way back to the hotel. I didn't have to pedal or steer or anything. Just sit tight and enjoy the ride!

(Later that night, Dr. LaFrance drove Ryan back into town who used the master-bike-key to ride my bike back to the hotel. Thanks Ryan!)
