Confession 2: I don't actually pay very much attention to the world around me.
I just finished reading an article in World Magazine "Update from Walmart" in which the author casually surveyed 25-30 shoppers outside a Walmart in Pennsylvania. He asked each of them to summarize what the "fiscal cliff" was all about, but only a handful even tried to answer. The majority simply didn't have a clue. The author comes to no solid conclusion or final facts about his findings, but suggests that fewer and fewer people are willing to pay attention to the world around them and join the discussion.
"These were not, after all, a bunch of adolescents. ... But for the most part, they were simply unable to use the common tools of conversation to talk about the world and the society in which they find themselves. ... This was emptiness."More and more I realize I am contributing to that empty conversation-less world. I don't pay attention to news and I don't make an effort to understand what's going on around the world. What I once learned in school, I am forgetting quickly and am losing any source of background knowledge from which to form or give opinions. I am unable to participate in conversations about the world around me.
I have lost my voice.
How can I impact the world around me if I know nothing about it? How can I be a light in it if I'm so outside of it?
Resolution: To regain my voice. Step by step.
Count this as my first step.
