Bread, Jesus, and Reality

Miller (again, author of "Blue Like Jazz" and, my current read, "Searching For God Knows What") was writing about communion tonight, well actually he wrote it a while ago, but I read it tonight. Anyway, he said that we partake of the bread to signify, in a way, that Jesus is really real, just like the bread. Actually, I don’t really think this is the point Miller was trying to make, but it’s what I was thinking about. As real as the bread is to me (I can see it, touch it, taste it, feel it down my throat…) is as real as Jesus Christ is even to this day. He really lived and really died and really rose from the dead. And that is as true as the bread I touch is true.

I feel like a lot of Christians, myself included, forget Christ's reality sometimes. We know He is real, but we have a hard time living like we believe it wholeheartedly. It is weird to think that I could have known Jesus in person if I was only born 2000+ years ago. How weird would it have been to pass the Messiah in the streets or to hear my Savior preaching on the hill? Sadly, I often feel like if I did know Him like that, it would not be as great as I am imagining it would be. You know, I feel like Jesus would probably become normal to me and His miracles might be less exaggerated than I thought… but then I realize that Jesus does not and will never disappoint! He is Savior and He fulfills our every desire more than we could ever imagine! He is real and He is Awesomely, Amazingly, Wonderfully, Marvelously, (and every other incredible word I can think of) Good! No matter how great we can try to imagine Christ being, He is MUCH better. He has never let us down and He never will. He will not disappoint for He is real and He is the Good, the True, and the Beautiful in complete essence. Really.
