Mother's Day

I went to the grocery store this morning to pick up apple butter and jelly for the traditional breakfast of crepes that my dad and I always make for mom on Mother's Day. As I stood in the "10 items or less" line, I was captivated by the little girl ahead of me. She stood right next to her daddy, proudly holding a latex balloon and a single red carnation. Clearly, this was a Mother's Day gift in the making (or the buying). To some people, those two items could seem insignificant and nothing like a Mother's Day gift should be. But as I watched the girl dig through her little pink wallet to find the exact change she needed, I realized that this gift would mean the world to both the girl and her mommy. Even though she couldn't afford a diamond necklace, the newest ipod, or even a dozen red roses, her feeble gift came from an honest heart and would mean so much more than any hip-new gadget ever could. She was going to give a gift that would make her mom smile and would show her love. Well, it at least made me smile... kids are too cute.

Happy Mother's Day!
