Oompa-Loompas... or Smurfs?

It’s a good thing I don’t work at the Mars chocolate factory… because “little-Lizzie” would surely become “Large-Lizzie” in a big hurry.

Today we toured to the Mars chocolate factory in Stupino, Russia. My life will never be the same again. I have never seen or smelled that much chocolate before in my life – it was glorious! I didn’t know the world could possibly consume as much chocolate as I saw, and yet, all I saw was 5 minutes worth of manufacturing! I was in chocolate heaven… and within 5 inches of a hot-off-the-press (if you can call it that) freshly made Snickers bar. In fact, I was that close to about 1000 of them, but not allowed to touch any of it!

Talk about torture! It was like the best dream ever combined with your worst nightmare.

The terrible part was seeing tons and TONS of delectable chocolately confectionary goodness carelessly thrown into bins to be thrown away because they were somehow “defective.” All I could think was… with ALL this chocolate that you’re disposing and all this INSANE amount of chocolate you make… can’t we at least have a sample of a less-than-perfect but still amazingly delicious chocolate scraps?

When we got back to the conference room, what should we find but a ful bag of candy for each person of our group – complete with 4 exotic Dove chocolate bars and an assortment of “fun size” chocolates.

The tour couldn’t have ended on a sweeter note… except for the very unfortunate fact that hardly anybody had room or weight left in their suitcase to carry the chocolate before our next flight. Which meant, of course, that a very chocolatey and sugar-hyper bus ride ensued.

Fortunately, the rumors are true; Oompa loompas DO exist! Well, either that, or they miraculously transform all their visitors and make them look like some sort of smurfs... Oompa-Loompas? Smurfs? Hobbits? You decide...
